Kickboxer spreads the IDS UK message - August 08
CHAMPION kickboxer Denise Mellor is able to combine her love of the fast-moving sport with helping to spread positive medical messages for IDS UK.
The superfit sportswoman from Bournemouth can continue her work as a merchandiser for the Hampshire based medical marketing firm and maintain a strict trraining schedule that will see her in the gym twice a day.
Denise,36, is part of a dedicated team who restock the leaflet stands in 6,000 doctors surgeries throughout the UK and hundreds of pharmacies too.
“My work fits in perfectly with my training and I have now become a team leader. Every quarter we restock the leaflet stands – and each year the number of outlets grows considerably,” she said.
Denise and other members of the merchandising team are always guaranteed a warm welcome when they arrive at a doctor's surgery or pharmacy.
“We always get good, positive feedback about the service. Quite often the staff like to see what leaflets are coming in and they will comment about the most popular ones. I see the work as important because it is helping to spread a preventative health message,” she said.
Soon the high-kicking athlete will be off to Thailand to take part in competitions that only a handful of Brits are invited to take part-in – and Denise is justifiably proud to be going.
“We are going out to Bangkok in early August for an event that coincides with the Thai Queen's birthday – only champions are selected to fight and I am so proud to be asked to go,” she said.
A former marathon runner, Denise became interested in the martial art through her partner Lorne Castle who is a black belt second dan.
“He's taught me everything I know and now I am the black graded British title holder,” explained Denise.
Even when the couple go on holiday they choose to go to Thailand so they can train out there.
“We go out there and train every year, wherever we go on holiday we make sure we train with the locals and we pick up more skills,” she said.
